Recitals, Adjudications & Festivals
Students in the Susan Todd Music Studio may participate in studio or area recitals and community service performances. OMTA (Oregon Music Teachers Association) and OFMC (Oregon Federation of Music Clubs) sponsor adjudications and festivals for performance, composition, and ensemble. All event registration fees are non-refundable after the stated registration deadline. Extra coaching, if needed, is $86/hour.Recitals and Community Performances
Studio Recitals and Playing Classes are held with groups of three or four families in the studio or at Calvary Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. All students are encouraged to participate. Playing Classes are for students only. Family and friends are welcome to attend Recitals and Family Music Nights. Students may also participate in recitals sponsored by the Hillsboro Area OMTA, which are held several times throughout the year. Additionally, we have occasional opportunities to entertain senior citizens in the community. Any student may plan a solo recital, and high school seniors are encouraged to plan a recital celebrating their years of study. Registration is due two weeks prior to the event. Studio and Westside Recital fees are $25 per event. Senior Recital fee is $150. There is no fee for community performances.
Syllabus
Oregon Music Teachers Association sponsors these student evaluations. Students may participate in the fall or spring. Students prepare three memorized pieces (four for upper division) plus an extensive set of technical and theoretical skills for evaluation by a trained adjudicator. Students receive judge’s comments and a certificate. Evaluations are held in private studios in Hillsboro or Beaverton. Registration is due 4-6 weeks prior to the event. Fees range from $40-150.
Composition Events
For the composers in the studio there are several competitive and non-competitive options. Details and fees for each will be announced to those showing interest. Fees include score and recording preparation and assistance with submission.
In Good Hands is a project with Cascadia Composers, a Portland-based composer organization. Students choose a piece or composer to work with and prepare together for a summer recital in Portland.
Junior Festival
Students in this festival participate in small recitals, receive the judge’s verbal and written comments, a certificate and ribbon, and can accumulate points towards a gold trophy cup (each trophy award level takes three to five years to complete.) Students prepare two memorized solo pieces for this April event. Duet and concerto options are available as well. Junior Festival is held at Christ United Methodist Church, 12755 NW Dogwood Street, Portland OR 97229. Registration is due in late February. Entry fee is $40 per event.
Repertoire Festivals
The Hillsboro Repertoire festival features recital/master-class sessions for advancing pianists, with from the “classical” canon. Students can also participate in the West Portland District Period festivals. Hillsboro festivals take place in Hillsboro or Forest Grove, West Portland events are held at Portland Piano Company, 8700 NE Columbia Blvd., Portland, OR 97220. Registration is due 4-6 weeks prior to the event. Fees range from $40-60.
SPT Conferences
Parents are asked to attend the first or last 15 minutes of lessons May 10-13, 2027, when Students, Parents and Teacher confer regarding the year’s progress and make plans for the coming year.
Family Music Night
This is a fun in-studio event when three or four studio families gather for an evening of musical enjoyment and share any treats they care to bring. Set for May 26- & 27, 2027, families are invited to the studio to share music performed by the musicians enrolled in the studio and any family members who also wish to share their talents.
